The Quattro Canti of Palermo

The Quattro Canti

A walk to the Quattro Canti, Il Teatro del Sole

Palermo's urban masterpiece

The ideal city center of Palermo corresponds to the Quattro Canti, the meeting point of the two great city arteries, via Vittorio Emanuele and via Maqueda, which divides the city into four large cantons, called mandati: The Royal Palace, Monte di Pietà, Castellammare and Tribunali.

This area became the main nucleus of the late 16th and 17th century, when the Spanish viceroys wanted to celebrate their presence in Palermo by building Baroque structures, residences, and churches.

The square became the new center of the city, a place of meetings, festivals and processions that benefited from the scenic and monumental aspect of the architectural complex, made mannerist style. The architecture of the Quattro Canti symbolizes the hierarchy of values that inspired the new rulers of the city: the first tier are the Carrara marble statues representing the four Seasons; upon that are the statues of the Spanish rulers Filippo II, Filippo III, Filippo IV and Carlo V. In the third tier are the statues of the Saints, Oliva, Agata, Cristina and Ninfa, patron of each of the four mandates of the city.

Today in the square there are the evocative traditional carriages with horses, and the modern white and blue motorcycles, called ‘lape’, for suggestive sightseeing tours.
