Ballarò and the historical markets

Our B&B inside the historic market of Ballarò

The historic market of Ballarò in Palermo

IBallarò historic market is in the heart of Palermo, close to the Central Station and the Royal Palace, and is the place that best expresses the multicultural soul of Palermo. A walk in Ballarò is also a must-do for those who want to try the famous Palermo street food.

In the Middle Ages it was the market for fine meats, fish and spices that came from the Deccan, carried by the caravans that entered the city right from Ballarò, built in the area near the mosque, on the model of the traditional Arab souk.

Ballarò is the oldest of the four historical markets (the others are Vucciria, Capo, and Lattarini) and the one that best resisted the weather, maintaining the colorful character of a popular environment, a vibrant market in the morning and a meeting place for young university by night.

It develops along the road that starts from Corso Tukory and ends in via Vittorio Emanuele and via Maqueda, in an area full of monuments and particularly important and evocative churches. In recent years the market has been enriched by the presence of foreign communities, who have integrated their commercial activities with those of the locals, learning from them the technique of selling by the ‘abbanniata’, the characteristic shouting of sellers who try to attract the attention of customers.

A walk in Ballarò is also a must for those who want to try the famous Palermo street food and discover that in Palermo finger food has always existed!
